Since you've graciously decided to come to my online home, I'd like to tell you a little more about how this little shop came to be.
First of all, what does Ninani even mean? Ninani means "I burn" in Quechua, the language of my Incan ancestors. I chose this name to reflect my desire to spend my days engaged in work that I feel passionate about - what makes me burn.
My love of fiber arts began as a little girl sitting by my Abuelita's side in rural Peru, transfixed by her effortless gift of spinning yarn by hand. Having traveled extensively through Peru over the next two decades, I was surrounded by the most rich and beautiful textiles. The various iconographies and color palettes of each local region - from Chinchero to Moche to Chimu - have been woven into my heart and fill me with such joy.
When I got a little older, I learned to crochet and knit from my mother and other women in my extended family, and honed my craft into adulthood, eventually adding in the crafts of embroidery, macrame, weaving, and hand spinning yarn on both a drop spindle and a spinning wheel. After taking some time away from fiber arts to complete a PhD in Human Development and raise a family, the ethereal call of my ancestors could not go unanswered. I left my job in educational research and began pursuing fiber artistry full time.
Led by my passion for fiber and reverie for Peruvian textiles, Ninani Fiber Art is the culmination of a lifelong passion which began many years ago at my Abuelita's side. I am grateful to be able to share it with you.
